The Happy Sad

facebook relationship status changed to singleWell here we are folks, October.

In most cities, when the seasons change they are usually marked by the turning of leaves, cooler weather or people wearing more layers.

In West Hollywood, the change of seasons is marked by gay men switching from tank tops to deep v-neck t-shirts, beaches to tanning beds and starvation to eating.

It brings me great pleasure to know that all the ab-flaunting guys in the city get a break and can finally eat a meal with out fear of an impromptu pool party!

But just as I begin to breath a sigh of relief, several status updates on Facebook begin to string together a different story.

“Is now Single” is the status updates on a few walls.

In panic mode, I begin to filter through all the comments and research what has happened with these relationships.

Has there been a mass exodus of relationship minded people?

Have aliens taken over people’s minds and forced them to end happy relationships?

I needed to know the truth, but what I discovered was far from what I expected.

Upon my very difficult research, one of the relationships ended because one partner could not see marriage in the near future. Another ended because a partner was not prepared to commit to a relationship that was heading towards being a parent.

As I digested the conversations and my discoveries, I found myself unprepared for how sad and yet excited I was.

After many decades of empty calorie dating, gay men are finally focusing on relationships that lead to marriage and beyond.

We are finally, without discrimination, able to desire, need and demand the kinds of relationships that only our straight counterparts were able to have.

It is with that wave of acceptance, we are now taking a second look at what truly defines what it means to be in a gay relationship—and what we expect to evolve from it.

We are rewriting the rules, we are rewriting the future and we are rewriting our happiness.

We are finally, without discrimination, able to desire, need and demand the kinds of relationships that only our straight counterparts were able to have.

So although, it was with a heavy heart that I saw a few relationships end this past month. I am filled with great happiness knowing that many hearts have just begun their quest to find a guy who wants more out of relationship—and they are not settling!

So to every gay man, young and old, hear this:

Your heart is officially able to dream as big and as far and wide as ever before. You can have that husband, those kids and that dog with the white picket fence if you want to.

This is your opportunity.

So as you start to rewrite the rules and your future, remember, don’t stop searching until you find exactly what you want.

Till next Blog-
